2026–27 Annual Leave Assumptions & Accrual Rules

Annual leave generally accumulates progressively from the start of employment based on ordinary hours worked. It is not normally granted as one annual lump sum.

Calculations follow the Fair Work Ombudsman National Employment Standards (NES) pro-rata accrual rates (4 weeks per year based on ordinary hours; 5 weeks for eligible shiftworkers), configurable workplace leave loading rates, and ATO Schedule 7 termination payout withholding rules (applying the marginal rate method for normal resignation/termination and 32% withholding for genuine redundancy, invalidity, or approved early retirement schemes).

  • NES 4-week base entitlement based on ordinary hours (5 weeks for eligible shiftworkers)
  • Progressive continuous accrual (approx. 1/13th of ordinary hours worked, or 2.923 hrs/wk for 38-hour full-time)
  • Leave loading depends on award/agreement (17.5% is common but not a universal NES right)
  • Superannuation Guarantee: $0 on unused leave paid as a termination lump sum (ATO SGR 2009/2)
  • ATO Schedule 7 PAYG withholding estimates (withholding may differ from final tax liability)
  • Casual employees generally receive 25% casual loading in lieu of paid annual leave

What This Calculator Estimates

Estimates accrued annual leave hours, weeks, and working days, remaining leave balances after leave taken, gross leave cash values, award leave loading, and ATO Schedule 7 PAYG termination tax withholding.

What It Includes
  • National Employment Standards (NES) 4-week base accrual (or 5 weeks for eligible shiftworkers)
  • Progressive continuous accrual modeling based on ordinary working hours
  • Deduction of annual leave already taken to derive current balance
  • Configurable working days per week to calculate equivalent working days accurately
  • Pro-rata accrual calculations for permanent part-time employees based on ordinary hours
  • Configurable leave loading (0%, standard 17.5% award rate, or custom percentage)
  • ATO Schedule 7 PAYG termination withholding (distinguishing withholding from final tax liability)
  • Superannuation Guarantee treatment ($0 on termination lump sum per ATO SGR 2009/2)
What It Does Not Include
  • Industry-specific Modern Award penalty rates or specific enterprise agreement (EBA) clauses
  • Long Service Leave, Personal/Carer's (Sick) Leave, or Public Holiday in-lieu accruals
  • Casual employment paid leave accrual (casual employees receive loading in lieu of paid leave)
  • Pre-18 August 1993 transitional termination payment accruals
Main Calculation Assumptions
  • • Ordinary working hours are based on user input (default 38 hours per week, excluding overtime).
  • • Working days per week are based on user input (default 5 days) to determine hours per working day.
  • • Leave loading is not universally mandatory for all employees — it applies only where specified in an applicable modern award, enterprise agreement, or employment contract.
  • • ATO Schedule 7 withholding is an estimate of tax withheld upon payment and does not represent final income tax liability.
Calculation Methodology

Annual leave entitlement is derived from ordinary weekly hours multiplied by statutory entitlement weeks per year (4 weeks = 1/13th of ordinary hours worked). For date-based calculations, continuous service is calculated across calendar years and days. Leave balance equals accrued hours minus leave taken. Gross leave pay is calculated as Balance Hours × Hourly Rate plus applicable leave loading. PAYG withholding is estimated under ATO Schedule 7 rules.

General Estimation Notice:

This calculator provides estimates based on standard National Employment Standards (NES) provisions and user-supplied assumptions. Actual leave balances, rates of pay, leave loading entitlements, and termination tax withholding depend on the specific Modern Award, Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA), or individual contract terms applicable to your employment. Always confirm final payroll figures with your employer or a qualified professional.
